Short range gravitational fields: Rise and fall of the fifth force
نویسنده
چکیده
During the 80’s, some experiments and the repetitions of old ones, lead to the hypothesis of a fifth force. Nevertheless, a more accurate research was not able to confirm this hypothesis. This article wants to go over again the most important steps of the event. PACS-01.65.+g History of science. PACS-04.80.Cc Experimental tests of gravitational theories. What Can We Do on Gravity with Antihydrogens? *
We discuss the implications of the proposed gravitational redshift experiment on antihydrogens. We show that the result should be the same as on hydrogens in spite of different free-fall accelerations (WEP violation) which may occur if there is a vector fifth-force field. We emphasize the experiment is unique in the sense that it tests the Equivalence Principle expressed in its ultimate form, p...
متن کاملQuantum stability of chameleon field theories.
Chameleon scalar fields are dark-energy candidates which suppress fifth forces in high density regions of the Universe by becoming massive. We consider chameleon models as effective field theories and estimate quantum corrections to their potentials. Requiring that quantum corrections be small, so as to allow reliable predictions of fifth forces, leads to an upper bound m<0.0073(ρ/10 g cm(-3))(...
متن کاملGravitational forces from Bose-Einstein condensation
The basic idea that gravity can be a long-wavelength effect induced by the peculiar ground state of an underlying quantum field theory leads to consider the implications of spontaneous symmetry breaking through an elementary scalar field. We point out that Bose-Einstein condensation implies the existence of long-range order and of a gap-less mode of the (singlet) Higgs-field. This gives rise to...

Allowing the energy of a gravitational field to serve partially as its own source allows gravitating bodies to exhibit stronger fields, as if they were more massive. Depending on degree of compaction of the body, the field could be one to five times larger than the Newtonian field. This is a comfortable range of increase in field strength and may prove to be of convenience in the study of vel...

After a short review of nematic liquid crystals and their interactions with the external fields, we investigate the effect of a disordered field which destabilizes the orientational molecular order of a nematic film. We analyze the effect of the disorder in the applied field on the pseudo-Casimir force which is induced due to thermal fluctuationsbetween the confining walls of the nematic film. ...
